My First Digimon Online Regional Experience

I have been collecting the latest Digimon TCG since it released here in the states, but haven’t had many opportunities to play it and really haven’t thought about joining an online tournament due to the setup requirement. However, I decided to give one a shot and signed up to CoreTCG’s Online Regional.

The first thing I needed to tackle was my web camera setup. For those not aware, the Digimon TCG (and most of Bandai’s TCGs) don’t have a digital client to use, so organizers of tournaments have been using discord or similar apps. There is the Bandai TCG Online Lobby site for their Asia base but to my understanding it just a client to setup video call so a webcam is still needed. For the average joe, this annoying as you need to have the space with a good webcam, lighting and internet to play the game. I have fought with my setup prior to this, even making a makeshift camera stand from spare wood I had laying around. So after fighting with various webcams I decided to get a USB document camera, which since I decided to enter this tournament just a little over a week away so I was cutting it close. This was the most annoying part of getting ready for the tournament as there are actually rules and recommendations on how your webcam setup should be. However, got it to where I felt comfortable and now it was time to build a deck.

I decided to play a “fun” deck since I wasn’t aiming to earn my invite to the National Tournament, but mainly wanted more playing experience so I went with one of my favorite decks I have built, ChaosGallantmon. I really enjoy playing purple in the Digimon TCG due to the making the trash a source to pull cards from or use to trigger effects. Red/Purple ChaosGallantmon is fun as it has both board clearing and card searching effects. Here is the final version of the deck I used for the tournament:

The main goal of this deck is not only putting cards into my trash to pull from later but to also trash cards from my opponent’s deck. My reason for this is to hinder decks that use X-Antibody Digimon and DigiXRoss evolutions, as other colors really don’t have a way to retrieve cards from the trash to my knowledge, so my hope was to remove from the group and delay them as much as I could. As far as the decks performance, it probably could of been better. One of main issues I had was filling the field with my Digimon so I can trigger EX3 Growlmon’s inherited effect of deleting a Digimon to gain Security Attack, which then would allow me to trigger BT5 BlackGrowlmon inherited effect of gaining a Security Attack if one of my Digimon was deleted. However, I wasn’t able to trigger these effects as I wouldn’t have another Digimon on the field. The other issue I had was not being able to utilize my breeding area. The breeding area is a safe place to Digivolve weaker Digimon since they can’t be targeted by effects, but that also means none of their effects fire off as well, so I couldn’t trigger ‘When Digivolving’ effects. Overall, I’m happy with the deck and with a few more adjustments and some more play experience, think I will be a fun deck to play for awhile.

Now, let’s talk about the event itself. Will admit, didn’t realize it was going to run for 8 hours but overall it was a good experience, well at least for me. I got lucky and had some good opponent’s with no tech issues and for the most part had good to descent setups so the matches went off with little issues. As far as decks I ran into, it was actually pretty diverse with only running into two WarGreymon-X and a signal Shinegreymon. My first match was against a pretty interesting ShadowSeraphimon deck so I had a interesting first opponent. To be honest, there really isn’t to saw much about the event itself, as I would play the game and once done, just hang out and make sure I didn’t miss announcements from the staff (which did a awesome job given there was 400+ players). I thought I had more to say about the event, but I really don’t and maybe because my experience was very uneventful or maybe because I didn’t make the most of it, not sure. So with all that said, would I do it again, sure. Maybe I’ll give the Ultimate Cup a chance and see what decks I can make with the modified rules.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my post and until next time: Be Kind and Game on!
